Every morning on the tram in Exeter, students tap through vocabulary drills on their phones. Language-learning apps promise fluency in minutes a day, and their streaks, badges and cheerful reminders have made practice a daily habit for millions. The streak mechanic, researchers note, is borrowed from games precisely because attendance, not talent, is the app's real product. Research gives them partial credit. Learners who use apps for twenty to thirty minutes a day build real vocabulary and listening skills, especially beginners; the apps are excellent at turning a dead ten minutes on a bus into study time. Weekly progress charts, teachers observe, work best when they celebrate consistency rather than scores, which is exactly the habit the strongest classroom learners bring with them to the weekly conversation session. But apps rarely produce speakers. Because "the exercises reward tapping the right picture, users can score highly while remaining unable to hold a conversation, and about two in five of long-term users eventually quit before reaching even an intermediate level. That combination, small studies suggest, is what turns a pleasant habit into an actual working knowledge of the language. The most successful learners treat the app as a companion, not a course: lessons on the tram, then a weekly language café where mistakes are unavoidable. As one teacher put it, the app gets you to the door; you still have to walk through it. The door metaphor, students say, is the first thing they quote back when asked what the course left out.
