The machine outside the supermarket in Odense grinds, whirs and prints a receipt, and for the customer the moment is oddly satisfying: twelve empty bottles, sixty cents back. The city introduced its deposit scheme last spring, joining the dozen or so countries where about eighty-five per cent of plastic bottles are returned rather than abandoned.
The economics are simple enough for a child to explain. A bottle costs ten cents more at the till; bring the bottle back and the ten cents comes home. Behaviour follows with remarkable reliability. Beaches and lay-bys report two fifths less bottle litter within the first season, and street cleaners describe the change as the disappearance of a whole category of work. Bottles come back whole, too, because a crushed one cannot be refunded — which makes recycling far easier downstream.
The friction has moved rather than vanished. Shopkeepers complain about storage space, counting machines and the paperwork of returning deposits. Small shops with one back room have become unpaid recycling depots, and the trade association is lobbying for a cap on how many containers any single store must accept. Meanwhile a stubborn minority of bottles still leaves the system in picnic bags and office bins.
The scheme's designers take the long view. Habits, they argue, are built from small repeated consequences, not campaigns. The bin is where convenience goes to end; the deposit simply gives people a reason to stop along the way. coin is a small teacher, but it teaches every time — and by now, the machine's hum has become part of the street's ordinary sound.
