Every few years someone announces the death of the printed book. Sales figures tell a different story. In most European countries, print still accounts for the large majority of books sold, and the share held by e-books has barely moved since 2015. The reasons are not sentimental. Readers report that they remember more of a printed text than of a screen version, particularly when the material is difficult. One explanation is physical: a paper book gives the reader two clear signals — how much has been read, and how much remains — that a progress bar only partly replaces. Another is that a screen carries distractions that a page does not. None of this means that digital reading is worse in every case. For novels read on a phone during a commute, or for academic papers that must be searched, the digital form wins easily. What the evidence challenges is the assumption that one format will replace the other. Reading is not a single activity, and the format tends to follow the purpose. Publishers have noticed. Rather than choosing, most now sell both and price them separately, which suggests that the two forms serve different readers — or the same reader at different times.
