A. Behind the railway station in Utrecht, a strip of wasteland has been divided into sixty small plots, each with a shed, a water butt and, increasingly, a queue. The city's community gardens have become so popular that newcomers now face an eighteen-month waiting list, and the council has begun converting a second site to keep up with demand. What draws people there, the gardeners insist, is not really the vegetables. B. Each plot costs a modest yearly fee, and about a third of every fee goes to shared costs: tools, water, insurance and the compost that everyone uses. The remainder pays for fences and repairs. A roster of volunteers keeps the communal paths mowed, and a shelf by the gate holds surplus seeds, spare courgettes and, in high summer, a basket labelled "take what you need". C. School groups visit on Thursday mornings, and one whole plot is reserved for a food-bank project that has supplied local soup kitchens all summer. Not everything among the raised beds is harmony, however. Critics inside the council note that waiting lists stretch for years while schools and food charities asking for plots are often turned away. D. Others complain that a few tenants quietly treat their plots as private patios, complete with sofas, barbecues and locked gates, which sits oddly with the spirit of sharing. The gardeners' answer is patient rather than defensive. Rules are being rewritten, more land is being sought, and the sharing shelf is being doubled in size. E. As the longest-serving plot holder put it, the harvest that matters most never reaches a plate. Vegetables, in his view, are only the visible part of a crop whose real yield is neighbours who learn each other's names. After all, garden is measured in seasons, not in quarterly reports, and by that measure the garden has been profitable from its very first spring.
