Students who take notes by hand often record fewer words than those who type, and yet they sometimes remember more. The explanation is not that handwriting is noble. It is that writing by hand is slow, and the slowness forces a decision: the student cannot copy everything, so they must choose what matters and put it in their own words. Typing removes that pressure. A fast typist can produce a near-transcript without ever deciding what the lecture was about.
This does not mean laptops should be banned. A transcript is useful when the material is dense and the exam will test detail. The problem appears when the same tool is used for both purposes. Students who type everything often believe they have understood, because the page is full. The page is full; the head is not.
Teachers can reduce the confusion cheaply. Give the lecture a clear structure, say explicitly which parts must be memorised and which are context, and set one question that cannot be answered by copying. The tool matters far less than whether the student has to think while using it.
