Twenty years ago, the library was the quietest building on campus. Today, at the one I work in, the loudest floor is the ground floor, where students drink coffee, rehearse presentations and record videos for their courses. Book borrowing has fallen by nearly half since 2010, while visits to the building have risen by a third.
This is not a contradiction. What has changed is what students come for. A survey of first-year students found that only one in five had borrowed a printed book in the previous month, but four in five had used the library as a place to work with others. Group projects, which were rare when most courses were examined by a single written paper, now make up a large share of assessment in almost every department.
Some librarians resist the change. They argue that a library without books is simply a café with better lighting, and that the quiet study space — already the hardest thing to find on campus — should be protected rather than reduced. Others point out that the building's real value lies in something less visible: it is one of the few places where a student can sit for six hours without being asked to buy anything.
Both sides agree on one point. Whatever the library becomes, it cannot be designed around the book, because the book is no longer the centre of how students learn.
